Just When Things Are Starting to Move, the Enemy Sneaks In

Have you ever noticed how opposition often shows up right when things begin to move forward?

You pray, and doors start opening.
You sense clarity after a long season of waiting.
Ministry gains momentum.
Your heart feels renewed.

And then—unexpected resistance appears.

Scripture reminds us that this pattern is not new.

Progress Often Attracts Opposition

Throughout the Bible, moments of spiritual breakthrough are frequently followed by challenge.

  • Jesus is baptized and affirmed by the Father—then immediately tempted in the wilderness.
  • Nehemiah begins rebuilding the wall—then faces ridicule, threats, and distraction.
  • The early church grows—then encounters persecution and internal division.

The enemy rarely wastes energy on stagnation. Resistance often comes because something is happening.

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
(1 Peter 5:8)

The Enemy Often Works Subtly

Rarely does opposition arrive loudly or dramatically. More often, it slips in quietly:

  • discouragement instead of disaster
  • distraction instead of destruction
  • doubt instead of denial
  • division instead of direct attack

A small seed of confusion can derail forward motion if left unchecked.

“We are not ignorant of his schemes.”
(2 Corinthians 2:11)

Discernment is essential when momentum is building.

Opposition Does Not Mean Failure

It is important to remember: resistance is not a sign that God has abandoned the work. Often, it is confirmation that the work matters.

Jesus said:

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
(John 16:33)

Opposition is not the end of the story. It is part of the journey.

How Do We Respond?

When resistance comes, Scripture gives us clear guidance:

  • Stay prayerful, not panicked
  • Stay united, not divided
  • Stay focused, not distracted
  • Stay humble, not defensive

Nehemiah responded to opposition by praying, posting guards, and continuing the work (Nehemiah 4). He refused to stop building.

Momentum Requires Vigilance

Spiritual progress must be guarded. Prayer keeps our hearts aligned. Gratitude keeps us grounded. God’s Word keeps us steady.

When things start moving, that is not the time to relax spiritually—it is the time to lean in.

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
(James 4:7)

Final Encouragement

If you are experiencing resistance right now, take heart. It may be a sign that God is at work in ways you cannot yet fully see.

Do not be discouraged.
Do not be distracted.
Do not stop building.

Stay faithful. Stay prayerful. Stay anchored in Christ.

What God begins, He is faithful to complete.
